About Us

Welcome from Head of School

image - About UsWelcome to the St George & Sutherland Clinical School, part of the Faculty of Medicine at UNSW Sydney. The Clinical School was established in 1969 and is located off the University campus at both the St George and Sutherland Hospitals, which are principal teaching hospitals of UNSW Australia. Our hospitals serve local communities of over 450,000 people.

The Clinical School comprises the Departments of Medicine and Surgery, and includes the highly active Clinical Teaching Units, where our extensive and critical clinical education components of the undergraduate medicine program are coordinated.  Our teaching programs are tightly linked with those of colleagues from the Schools of Psychiatry and Women's and Children's Health. Our students across all three phases of the curriculum are exposed to a highly diverse population of patients, and to the skills of generous and gifted clinical teachers. Approximately 300 students attend the St George and Sutherland hospitals as part of their clinical studies, as well as overseas medical students attached to the Clinical School for their elective studies.

The Clinical School offers postgraduate research positions with exciting opportunities in a diverse range of areas, from clinical to health services to laboratory research.  Our principal focus is in improving the health of our communities by excellence in research, carried out in cutting edge facilities and with strong links to the main UNSW campus as well as with affiliated institutions.

The Clinical School has an active research program with approximately 25 postgraduate research students currently enrolled and working on a variety of projects. The School has particular strengths in a number of areas including Cancer Biology, Immunology, Rheumatology, Renal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Intensive Care, Microbiome and others, and is committed to offering excellence in education and research.

If you are interested in undertaking research in a Clinical School setting, explore and be stimulated by the "Research Activities" section of this site where you can identify the different areas of endeavour and contact details for research leaders in the School.

I am delighted to welcome undergraduate and postgraduate students and staff to the St George and Sutherland Clinical School.  Whether you are arriving as a phase 1 medical student, a new higher degree research student, or a conjoint member of clinical staff in the hospitals, I hope you will find your time with us fulfilling and educational.

I'd like to invite new researchers, administrative staff and conjoints to explore all that is available at St George and Sutherland Clinical School, whether it's education, inspiration or simple factual information.
