Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to the St George Clinical School website. It is a dynamic entity that will be updated regularly ensuring you have current access to the information about the School, teaching programs, research and its staff.

The St George Clinical School was established in 1969 and is located on the St George hospital campus, presently serving a local community of over 250,000 people. The Clinical School comprises the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Anaesthesia, and it includes the Clinical Teaching Unit. Sutherland Hospital has a strong teaching program for UNSW Medicine undergraduate students and is an important part of the Clinical School. The Illawarra & Shoalhaven Medical Teaching Program is also associated with the Clinical School and is located within the Wollongong and Nowra hospitals.

UNSW medical students attend St George for clinical tutorials as part of phase 1 (years 1 & 2), for 2 hours per fortnight. Phase 2 students (years 3 and 4) spend 3 full days per week in clinical sites including St George. Phase 3 (year 5 in 2008, then years 5 and 6 in future) includes full-time attachment to teams in clinical settings including St George Clinical School. Students in year 5 also participate in formal biomedical teaching to complement their learning in clinical sciences. In year 6 (final cohort in 2008), students are here on a full-time basis with additional rotations to rural hospitals.

Each year a number of international medical students apply for an attachment to the Clinical School for an elective term. St George welcomes all applications from students, however competition is keen and positions are limited. Please go the Clerkships page on the Faculty website for details.

The Clinical School offers a number of postgraduate places with exciting research opportunities in a diverse range of areas. There are presently over 40 postgraduate students undertaking various research programs in a wide variety of areas. If you are interested in undertaking research in the Clinical School, go to the "Research Activities" section of this site where you can identify the different areas of research and contact details for the relevant School member.

Take your time to explore the St George Clinical School website. I would welcome any constructive feedback on improvement of the site and I hope you take the opportunity to visit the St George Clinical School again soon.
